After you have acquired Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the United Kingdom , you can apply to become a British Citizen.

To become a British citizen you must: |
|
| |
- have been living in UK legally for 5 years continuously
- have been physically present in UK on date 5 years before application
- not have been absent for more than 450 days in total 5 year
- not have been absent for more than 90 days in year immediately before application
- have been settled (Indefinite Leave to Remain) at the time of application (generally for 1 year)
- show good character

If you are married to a British citizen, you may apply for British citizenship after you have lived in the UK for three years, provided that you hold ILR at this time.

You will need the following documents to apply :
|
|
| |
- a complete application form AN
- 2 passport photos
- 2 referees (must be a British citizen older than 25 and not a relative or solicitor) need to complete relevant sections and sign the back of one photo to confirm 'true likeness of applicant'
- all previous passports and UK visas/ permits
- original marriage certificates
- original birth certificates if children apply as well
- tax returns- p60, p45
- letter from employer/ accountant confirming income
- letter received from Home Office for Indefinite leave to remain
- Home Office fee (currently £268)
- Proof of accommodation.
- confirmation of Language requirements
- result of ‘Britishness' test
